Movie Thoughts: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

So I just saw it today with a couple of friends. Amazing, amazing, amazing. It’s even better than the first! The acting was really good (probably because the script was REALLY GOOD), the music was right for the scene and the camera has been upgraded to a less shakier one so we can actually see scenes. BTW minor spoilers for those who haven’t read the book in this review.

The two standout performances for me were Johanna Mason and Effie Trinklet, played by Jena Malone and Elizabeth Banks respectively. They just nailed the role perfectly… well all of the actors did but these two just…WOW! Johanna was unflinchingly brave and stubborn. I felt Elizabeth Banks in particular did a really good job with Effie. She played all of Effie’s facets well from her quirky happiness to her hidden empathetic side.

I was really happy that the movie closely followed the book’s plot. Nothing was left out from Effie’s gold tokens to Johanna’s elevator stripping. The movie is literally a direct book to screen translation. Not many books can be turned into a movie nowadays without getting warped in some way so I’m really happy Catching Fire didn’t.

It’s probably because I’m more invested in the characters after the first movie but this one was just so much more emotional. Katniss is haunted by dreams of the past Games, Peeta is still the nice guy and Gale… well he’s still hot. All I could think about during the whipping scene was “Look at dem abs :3”

Now time for a photo montage:

Yes, I am Gatsby… minus the blinding smile.
“Heeeeyyyyy there”
Hey look at that

End of montage.

The Verdict: GO WATCH IT NOW!!!
